Code of conduct for Gymnasts

  1. Female gymnasts should wear a one-piece gymnastic leotard. Male gymnasts should wear a leotard/T-shirt and shorts. All gymnasts may wear tracksuits and/or t-shirts during the warm up period, but must be removed for the rest of the training session, as they constitute a danger to both the gymnast and the coach.
  2. No jewellery what so ever, including ear studs or body piercing adornments to be worn at anytime during training or competition. This constitutes a safety hazard and British Gymnastics and their Insurers have made it a no-tolerance policy.
  3. Hair must be neatly tied up, out of the gymnast’s face.
  4. A NWSC Gymnastics Club leotard must be worn for all competitions, these can be purchased new or second-hand through the club website or through Alexis.
  5. Hand guards, wristbands and chalk are the gymnast’s responsibility; these can be purchased from the club.

Guidelines for parents

  1. If your child is expected to be away longer than 2 weeks, please let the gym know.
  2. Gymnasts should arrive a few minutes before the start of training. It is particularly upsetting for the younger children to arrive after all the others have started. All gymnasts should attend and take part in the warm up. It is an essential part of the training that helps the prevention of injury.
  3. If you would like to stay to watch a gymnastics session, please use the viewing gallery which can be accessed via stairs at either end of the larger sports hall.
  4. Please do not drop off your own, or other children, early to watch the classes unattended. NWSC Gymnastics Club and the Sports Centre Management cannot be responsible for these children until they enter the gym.
  5. Please ensure you are punctual collecting your children and remind them that they must wait in the building until collected.
  6. Please advise the NWSC Gymnastics Club of any change of circumstances, i.e. medical, change of address and particularly Mobile Phone No’s.

Code of Conduct for Coaches, Officials & Volunteers

All Coaches, Officials and Volunteers must:

  1. Consider the well being and safety of participants before the development of performance.
  2. Develop an appropriate working relationship with performers based on mutual trust and respect.
  3. Hold the appropriate, valid qualifications for the level of work that you are coaching and BGA and/or other insurance cover.
  4. Not coach above the level of your qualification that you have, unless under the supervision of a more senior coach. As a coach you should be aware of your own limitations.
  5. Make sure all activities are appropriate to the age, ability and experience of those taking part and ensure all participants are suitably prepared physically and mentally and correct progressions are understood when learning new skills.
  6. If in doubt about a gymnastic skill, ask a senior coach.
  7. Display consistently high standards of behaviour and appearance, dressing suitably in the gym and at competitions. Not use inappropriate language at any time whilst involved with club activities.
  8. Wear NO jewellery what so ever, including ear studs or body piercing adornments to be worn at anytime during training or competition. This constitutes a safety hazard and British Gymnastics and their Insurers have made it a no-tolerance policy. The only exception to this rule is the wearing of plain wedding bands.
  9. Be punctual at all classes, training and competitions. Always phone in if you are going to be late, or cannot attend.
  10. Never consume alcohol immediately before or during training or events.
  11. When taking a gymnast alone to a squad, training, competition or staying overnight, obtain written parental permission. All competitive gymnasts parents/carers will have signed a consent form which covers, Medical, Supervision and the Transportation of their child, i.e. to training and competitions. It is the responsibility of the coach to take a copy of this form with them to the event. These forms should be returned to the office, as they are Confidential.
  12. Never exert undue influence over performers to obtain personal benefit or reward.
  13. Always report any incidents, referrals or disclosures immediately, following the appropriate guidelines set out in the BG Child Protection procedures.
  14. If a gymnast is too large or heavy for you to support, ask for help. No one wants any coach to put himself or herself or the gymnast at risk.
  15. Never condone rule violations or use of prohibited substances.
  16. Make sure that confidential information is not divulged unless with the express approval of the individual concerned.
  17. Promote the positive aspects of the sport (e.g. fair play).
  18. Encourage performers to value their performances and not just results.
